Historical society museum offers 'Weekday Wonders'

If you're looking for something to do with the kids this summer, consider dropping by the McHenry County Historical Society Museum in Union and experiencing a "Weekday Wonder."

The schedule is as follows:

Tuesdays at Two:

Specialized tours of the museum campus are offered at 2 p.m. each Tuesday according to this rotating schedule:

• 1895 West Harmony School - Experience what school was like in a genuine one-room school.

• "Waterways and Getaways - Resort Life in McHenry County" exhibit. Vacationing at the turn of the century on Pistakee Lake.

• 1843 log cabin and heritage garden - Learn about the Gannon family, among the first who settled in Grafton Township in 1843 to farm. Learn about a pioneer kitchen garden and view the flowers, herbs and vegetables planted this year.

• General museum - Receive a guided tour throughout the 1870 museum building, as well as ancillary structures on the grounds.

Geocache Wednesdays:

Find the new Geocache on the museum campus.

Research Thursdays:

Free use of the society's extensive Research Library with a trained expert. Subject to availability and appointment required at least 24 hours in advance. Call (815) 923-2267 or email info@mchenrycountyhistory.org.

I-Spy Fridays:

Children and their parents can participate in one-of-a-kind scavenger hunt inside the museum. Qualify for a prize from the likes of sponsors Classic Cinemas, Kingston Lanes and Golf & Games, all in Woodstock.

The museum, at 6422 Main St. in Union, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, excluding holidays through September.

In addition to individuals receiving free admission as a perk of membership, throughout the summer season there are free admission weeks for residents living within townships/municipalities who are historical society members.

"It's an easy way for everyone to get out, do something together and support a local organization," said membership/volunteer coordinator Kim Borgerson. "Families do not have to travel to Chicago in order to see an award-winning museum."
