Centro de Informacion to host annual community luncheon

On Friday, May 5, Centro de Infomacion will continue its "Celebrando 45" anniversary with its annual Community Day Luncheon at the Elgin Country Club starting at 11:30 a.m.

Attorney Ricardo Meza, former Midwest Regional Counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, is the featured speaker.

As Illinois Executive Inspector General from 2010-15, he investigated employment, official misconduct, and hiring improprieties and procurement in 40 state agencies, 250 boards and commissions, public universities, and the office of the governor.

To be honored at the luncheon for their contributions this past year to Centro de Informacion and to the Hispanic community are: Steve Berke for serving as Centro's volunteer IT expert and Sue Harney, Dundee Township Supervisor, which has provided Centro with a service location in the Carpentersville/Dundee area.

Centro de Informacion, a social service agency that has been serving the northern Fox Valley Hispanic community for 45 years, has received a contract from the state of Illinois through June 2017 to be one of the Illinois Welcoming Centers.

Last year, Centro de Informacion with its main office in Elgin and satellite offices in Hanover Park and East Dundee provided services to 12,000 clients.

The Welcoming Center provides immigrant and refugee individuals and families with an array of services, information, programs and classes to assist in their path toward successful integration into the community, thereby creating self-sustaining and thriving communities.

These include access to and receive information about health, social, educational, employment, and homeownership services including: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, All Kids Health Insurance, citizenship, unemployment insurance, and employment/job fairs.

There also will be workshops dealing with: housing, financial literacy, fraud and identity theft, health and nutrition, parenting skills, and starting a business.
