MCC to welcome Antarctica traveler Betty Trummel Jan. 24
McHenry County College will host Betty Trummel, Antarctica explorer and retired local educator, who will present "Homeward Bound: Our Planet. In Your Hands," a lecture about her educational adventures in Antarctica, on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. in McHenry County College's Luecht Conference Center, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.
Trummel, a retired Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 educator, returned last month from a three-week science and leadership expedition to Antarctica, called "Homeward Bound," where she joined 75 other women from around the world.
She will share details about the challenges and rewards of participating in science research and expeditions in the Earth's southernmost continent and ocean.
Trummel will talk about the role of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in working in this remote, harsh and unique environment. She will also discuss how the Earth's polar regions are important areas where scientists study climate change and how the ecosystems on both land and water are impacted by a warming Earth.
Her expedition took place aboard a ship named Ushuaia, named after its home port in Argentina. In addition, she will share a bit about her research and student trip to Arctic Svalbard this past summer.
The event is co-sponsored by McHenry County College Sustainability Center, MCC's College and Career Readiness, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and Citizens' Climate Lobby, McHenry County Chapter.
