Birches Assisted Living residents learn the art of resilience

Healthy aging is about more than just eating well and exercising. It's about staying resilient in the face of life's challenges. That's why The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills is hosting Resilience-a 10-session program about how bouncing back quickly from life's setbacks can lead to a longer, more fulfilling life.

The program, which was developed by the healthy aging organization Masterpiece Living, is based on the ten tips to successful aging outlined in Dr. Roger Landry's book Live Long, Die Short: A Guide to Authentic Health and Successful Aging. Each session begins with a passage from Landry's book and then progresses into an open discussion about one of his ten tips for successful aging and how it can lead to greater resilience.

"Not everyone knows how important resilience is to healthy aging. People who recover quickly from stressful situations have better health and a longer lifespan than those who don't. So it's important to get a dialogue started about it," said Birches Activities Director Katie Klitchman.

The program began in August and will run through November. So far, residents have participated in lively discussions about several healthy aging tips from Landry's book , including "Use It or Lose It," Keep Moving," "Challenge Your Mind" and "Stay Connected." They're also learning how to build their own resilience by developing a strong sense of self-esteem, finding a sense of purpose and adopting a positive attitude.

"We're doing everything we can to make residents aware that healthy aging is in their hands," said Klitchman. "Most people aren't born resilient. But you can choose to be more resilient by adopting a positive perspective about yourself and your life."
