Home improvement programs thrive in suburban Cook County

North West Housing Partnership continues to provide suburban Cook County homeowners with home repair and improvement opportunities through two new programs.

The first, called the Owner-Occupied Home Upgrade Program, is offered by the Schaumburg organization in partnership with Chicago-based UP Development.

The program offers up to $12,000 in grants, and $20,000 in secondary mortgage financing in partnership with Village Bank and Trust, a Wintrust Company.

Homeowners who qualify can receive assistance for repairs and upgrades relating to energy efficiency, handicap accessibility and flood-related damage. The work is performed by licensed contractors that are screened by the partnership.

Funding is available to individual homeowners who earn less than $43,050 per year, and less than $49,200 for two people. The qualifying income amount increases based on the number of people in the household.

Program participants can also receive financial literacy services, assistance with tax returns and employment services, if needed.

The second program offered is the Cook County Residential Resilience Program, which provides a one-time monetary grant for flood remediation and mitigation. The assistance is available to income qualified owners of single through 4-unit homes in suburban Cook County.

Eligible properties are located west and north of 39th Street, and damages must have occurred during the April/May 2013 flood.

Several homeowners have already qualified for this program, and dozens more are currently going through the approval process.

The Residential Resilience Program is supported by the Cook County Department of Planning and Development within the Bureau of Economic Development.

"NWHP continues to develop public and private partnerships to assist low to moderate income homeowners," said NWHP Executive Director Robyn Sandys. "In addition to these programs, we are also involved in housing development and renovations, and provide free, first-time homebuyer education and advocacy through monthly workshops."
