Marx Brothers 'A Night at the Opera' to benefit Woodstock Opera House

A special, digitally mastered version of the Marx Brothers comedy classic "A Night at the Opera" will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at the Woodstock Theatre, 209 Main St. in downtown Woodstock.

Get ready for an afternoon of fun as Chico Marx (Woodstock's own Tom Kotte) greets everyone at the door. Can you get him to talk? You'll have to attend the fundraiser to find out!

Further bringing the Marx Bros to life at the theater will transpire when everyone in the audience turns into Groucho when they don a "Fuzz Puss," otherwise known as Groucho glasses, compliments of the Friends of the Opera House.

Tickets are $15 and available now at the Opera House, 121 E. Van Buren St., located across the square from the Woodstock Theatre.

Proceeds from this special event will be donated to the Opera House, a venue for top national and international acts as well as local performers.

"A Night at the Opera" celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, and is the ideal selection for this community event.

"A Night at the Opera" is a 1935 American comedy film starring Groucho Marx, Chico Marx and Harpo Marx, who run amuck in the world of opera when Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) meets aspiring singer Ricardo (Allan Jones), who is determined to win the love of fellow performer Rosa (Kitty Carlisle).

Directed by Sam Wood, "A Night at the Opera" was a box office hit and was selected in 1993 for preservation in the National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." It also is included in the American Film Institute's "100 Years…100 Movies" list.
