Quit 'cold turkey' during Great American Smokeout

Elgin, Ill. - Advocate Sherman Hospital is partnering with the American Cancer Society on Thursday, Nov. 20, for the Great American Smokeout.

The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.

At Sherman Hospital, an information table featuring smoking cessation materials, as well as guides to quitting smoking and the benefits of quitting, will be available for free to employees and the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the cafeteria at the hospital, 1425 N. Randall Road, Elgin.

Dr. C. Yeshwant, an oncologist on staff at Sherman Hospital, will also present a free lunch and learn from 1 to 2 p.m. in Conference Room C. He will discuss the effects smoking and lunch cancer prevention. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunches or purchase one from the café.

Twenty-five "Cold Turkey" sandwiches will also be handed out to employees and residents who are willing to "Pledge to Quit" or support a person who has made the "Pledge to Quit."

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet about 42 million Americans smoke cigarettes, according to the American Cancer Society. Smoking is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the U.S., and another 8.6 million people live with serious illnesses caused by smoking.
