Sept. 11 memorial services, celebrations

Several Lake County communities will host memorial services and other events this weekend to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and a farm field in Pennsylvania.

What follows is a listing of those events:

Wauconda: Village of Wauconda joins American Legion Post 911 in a commemoration to honor Sept. 11, 2001, victims and military personnel who have died in the war against terrorism. The event is Friday, Sept. 9, at 9 a.m. in front of the village hall, 101 N. Main St. It will include a proclamation by Mayor Mark F. Knigge announcing the day as Patriot Day, followed by a Blue Star Service Flag ceremony performed by members of Post 911. Northeast Lake County: #147;The Echoes of Lost Voices#148; memorial service is hosted by the fire departments of Quad One North (Beach Park, Newport, Winthrop Harbor and Zion) Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick#146;s Church, 15000 Wadsworth Road, Wadsworth. It will honor the memory and bravery of the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center Twin Towers. The service will include music, remembrances, video presentations, stories, prayers, traditional fire service honors, and the #147;Missing Firefighter Formation.#148; Participants will include active duty and retired firefighters and EMS personnel, children and family of firefighters, the St. Patrick Choir, clergy, bagpipers, color and honor guard personnel and state Rep. Brooke Memorial Bandshell, 902 Skidmore Drive, Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. It will include guest speakers. Participants are encouraged to bring a candle, but it is not required. For details, call (847) 838-4032.Barrington: A remembrance ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Barrington Memorial Park, Lincoln Avenue and Hough Street. It will honor America and those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Seating will be available at 8:15 a.m.Buffalo Grove: The Never Forget: 9/11 Commemorative Event is Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. at Buffalo Grove High School, Buffalo Grove. It is a joint presentation of the village of Buffalo Grove, the Buffalo Grove Arts Commission, and Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. The free event will feature Village President Jeffrey Braiman, a combined honor guard from the police and fire departments, a fire department bell ceremony, speakers representing the military and local clergy, and music by the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. Wayne Messmer will narrate Aaron Copland#146;s #147;A Lincoln Portrait#148; and sing his rendition of the national anthem. Deerfield: A Sunday ceremony on the front lawn of the Deerfield village hall begins at 1:30 p.m. with music performed by the Deerfield High School Warriors Marching Band. Members of the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District and the Deerfield Police Department will perform an honor guard ceremony at 1:45 p.m. At 2 p.m., in the village board council chambers, Rabbi Aaron Melman of Temple Beth Shalom of Northbrook will speak about his personal experiences as a student chaplain for the New York Fire Department on Sept. 11. This program will be broadcast on cable channel 10 and will be available on-demand at www.deerfield.il.us later that week. It is sponsored by the One Book One ZIP code Committee, the village of Deerfield, and the Deerfield Public Library.Grayslake/Hainesville: Cub Scout Pack 91, the villages of Grayslake and Hainesville, school districts 46 and 127 and many community organizations will host an American Heroes Community Celebration on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grayslake North High School, 1925 N. Route 83. The formal program begins at noon featuring local leaders and patriotic music. The event will honor men and women who serve in the military, police, fire and public works departments. It is free and open to the public. Service members are encouraged to wear their uniforms. It will include presentation of the Exchange#146;s 2010 Fire Employee of the Year, Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and Civilian Police Employee of the Year awards, So Proudly We Hail Award, and a special honoring of the Lake County fallen. Speakers will include State Sen. Suzi Schmidt, Gurnee Mayor Kristina M. Kovarik and Capt. Pete R. Lintner, Commanding Officer Training Support Center Naval Station Great Lakes. Members from the Gurnee Police and Fire Honor Guard, public works department, Gurnee Park District, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts of America, 2011 Gurnee queens and various elected and local leaders will attend. The Navy Band Great Lakes, RTC Great Lakes Recruit Honor Guard Division 945 and the Gurnee Grade School Singers will perform.Lake Villa Township: A remembrance is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Caboose Park, 37908 N. Fairfield Road. It will honor first responders and the men and women from the community who have served in the war on terrorism. First responders, armed services representatives, local government representatives, and area churches will recognize, honor and pray for safety and continued success in the war on terror. The keynote speaker is Navy Region Midwest Chief of Staff Capt. Caroline Nielson.Lake Zurich: The Lake Zurich High School Choir will perform two concerts Sunday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. in the performing arts center at the high school, 300 Church St. #147;In Remembrance#148; is a tribute to those who died 10 years ago. The concerts will be open to the public and free, but donations will be collected for charity. Midlothian Road, will dedicate its 9/11 memorial that includes a piece of steel beam from one of the World Trade Center towers. The dedication will feature fire and police color guards, bag pipe band, U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, Grand Dominion Singers and a 21-gun salute. There will also be a one-minute villagewide moment of remembrance at noon and a brief memorial commemoration at 1 p.m. in the Kracklauer Park Gazebo during the Mundelein Arts Festival. Naval Station Great Lakes: The base will be the destination for the Fort2Base run on Sunday. The run will start at Fort Sheridan in Highland Park. Runners will run for 11.5 miles along Green Bay Trail and finish the last 3.45 miles inside Naval Station Great Lakes. Speakers include Round Lake Beach Mayor Rich Hill, Round Lake Mayor James Dietz, Round Lake Heights Mayor Jean McCue, state Sen. Suzie Schmidt and the Rev. Lisle Kaufman. The event includes: a bell ringing ceremony by the Round Lake Fire Department; a 21-gun salute by the Round Lake Beach Police Department; patriotic songs by the Round Lake High School Choir. It will include an honor guard entrance, guest speakers and musical performances. The event is part of the Vernon Hills Police Department#146;s 7th Annual Law Enforcement Exhibition at the mall on Sept. 10 and 11.
