    Children and adults plunged into pools across the suburbs Friday as part of an effort to break a world record for the largest lesson. It was the fifth consecutive year for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. Organizers said the event spanned 13 countries and is meant to call attention to research showing formal swimming lessons and water safety training can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children ages 1 to 4.

As snow fell Friday night, Frosty made his annual visit at the winter event that included dog sled demonstrations, horse-drawn carriage rides, ice sculpting demonstrations and children’s crafts.

    Gurnee Park District commissioners have authorized borrowing $8.5 million for the purchase of the former Gold's Gym near the Tri-State Tollway. Board members at a meeting Tuesday night voted in favor of borrowing the cash by selling $8.5 million in bonds to investors. “It is the park district's intent to start selling memberships the day after we take ownership,” Executive Director Susie Kuruvilla said.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and prizes will be given for the most fish caught, biggest fish, smallest fish and most unique catch.
