Elmhurst's First Congregational to host Green Garden Fair May 13

On Saturday, May 13, the First Congregational Church in Elmhurst is holding their annual Green Garden Fair from 9 a.m. to noon at the church, 235 S. Kenilworth Ave. (southeast corner of Church and Kenilworth).

If you preordered from their organic seedlings sale you will be able to pick up your purchases at the fair. And if you didn't preorder, or wished you'd ordered more, the church will have plenty of additional plants for sale at the fair.

Plants make a great gift for mom so stop by and pick some up for her too.

Locally and organically grown herb and vegetable seedlings will be available. They are provided by Baas Greenhouses in Mokena, Illinois. Annual flower seedlings will also be available for purchase. While not grown organically, the flowers are grown by We Grow Dreams Greenhouse and Garden Center, which provides job training and employment for the developmentally disabled.

In addition, there will be numerous exhibitors on hand to help you learn how to live more sustainably, particularly as it relates to your garden. The University of Illinois Master Gardeners will be there to answer your growing questions.

The Elmhurst Garden Club and the Crestview Garden Club of Elmhurst will also be on hand to share information about their upcoming events. You'll be able to learn how to support our pollinators by visiting with the DuPage Monarch Project, Saving Monarchs, and the Wild Ones.

Hear what local environmental groups, such as the Citizens Climate Lobby, the Sierra Club, the Elmhurst Bicycle Club and the Climate Reality Project, are doing.

Learn how to order a rain barrel from the city by visiting the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition's exhibit or that of the Conservation Foundation which will also be promoting their Conservation@Home program. Caroline's Birdie Tweets will be selling bird seed ornaments, and City Bee Savers will be selling local, raw honey. Get free heirloom bush beans from Sustain DuPage and buy a beautiful stepping stone from Jan.

That's just a few of the things that will be happening at the Fair. You'll have a fun, educational morning and be able to look forward to growing healthy produce to feed your family this summer.
