Glenbard Parent Series speaker to help students navigate complex social world
The Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will present Strategies to Foster Tweens' and Teens' Social Skills with social-cognitive therapist Michelle Garcia Winner in two webinars: at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, via Zoom. Understanding others' perspectives is key to interpersonal relationships. However, students with social and communication challenges, including those with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may have difficulties understanding that others have different viewpoints. They often have trouble initiating conversation and responding appropriately to others' emotions.
The author of 40 award-winning books, Garcia Winner helps people develop social skills and what she calls social thinking. She will share her "Four Steps of Communication" that make navigating our increasingly complex social world more personally rewarding. Garcia Winner will help students understand the impression they are making on others. Her presentation will also teach strategies to help young people learn reciprocal communication skills and foster relationships.
Garcia Winner is founder and CEO of Social Thinking. She has created numerous evidence-based treatment frameworks to help caregivers and students develop social competencies and improve academic performance.
