Warrenville Public Library Director Sandy Whitmer retires after 17 years of service

After 17 years of service, Warrenville Public Library Director Sandy Whitmer is retiring in February 2023.

The Warrenville Public Library board of trustees is profoundly grateful for the dedication, commitment and boundless energy Sandy brought to the Warrenville community during her tenure. Since her arrival at the library in 2006, she has worked tirelessly to enhance the library's offerings to the community.

Board president Barbara DuRocher says, "Sandy has cultivated the library's staff to take leadership roles in creating new programs and services for our members."

Early in her tenure, she ushered in WiFi and downloadable books as well as the summertime tradition of "Concerts on the Commons." Under her direction, Warrenville Public Library District became a fine-free library and joined a consortium of 100 libraries, improving access to millions of books and other items for library members. During the pandemic, both employee and member safety were paramount in Sandy's decision-making. She found new ways to bring library resources to members, including curbside pickup service and 60-day online library card registration.

"Sandy's organizational expertise was vital during our 2017 renovation, which allowed our library to stay open for the majority of the construction and brought a beautiful new look and expanded resources to the library," DuRocher said.

The $2.5-million interior renovation included a multi-purpose meeting room, six study rooms, a computer lab, a teen lounge and a discovery room for young visitors.

The board of trustees invites the community to a retirement reception for Director Whitmer from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the meeting room of the library at 28W751 Stafford Place in Warrenville.

The board unanimously voted to hire Jason Stuhlmann as the new executive library director. He will start in early February 2023.

Warrenville Public Library District serves a community of 14,000 residents in DuPage County in west suburban Chicago. It is a member of the SWAN Library Services consortium, making over 8,000,000 items available to its public.
