Glenbard Parent Series webinar to feature author exploring the many layers of depression

The Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will present "Noonday Demon: An Anatomy of Depression" with author Andrew Solomon on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Solomon returns to GPS to eloquently describe the agony of depression and reasons for hope. Feeling sad or depressed is a normal reaction to life's challenges. But, when intense feelings of helplessness, hopelessness or worthlessness last for many days, there may be something more at play.

Solomon will discuss the reality of depression and its many layers. His presentation will highlight the wide range of available treatments; the efficacy of alternative treatments; and the impact of both medication and counseling.

By examining his own life story and the experiences of others who have battled depression, Solomon realized the challenge of defining depression. He lived the daily struggle and confronted cultural denial and fears associated with seeking help. His contributions to the world of mental health have expanded the understanding of both mental illness and the human condition.

Solomon is the author of "The Noonday Demon," winner of the National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He is a professor of clinical medical psychology in psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and lecturer in psychiatry at Yale University.
