Downers Grove native makes it to the big screen Oct. 15 at the Tivoli

Nancy Gelband, a Downers Grove native, was 8 years old when she first walked into the majestic Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove.

"Swiss Family Robinson" was on the big screen. Sixty-one years later, her artwork is featured on that very same screen.

Gelband says "My father gave me my first paintbrush around that same age. His gift was my invitation into the world of art. I have been painting ever since. I never imagined that my artwork would lead me back to the Tivoli."

Gelband and her artwork are highlighted in the documentary "Showing Up: Dare to Live from Your Heart." The film's premiere will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Classic Cinemas Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave. in Downers Grove. Gelband and others share their stories of how obstacles can become doorways to self-expression.

The central ideas are inspired by the book "Unfolding: Slow Down, Drop In, Dare More," written by Nancy Hill.

The film, directed by Keith Kelly and produced by Hill, offers insights from experts who illuminate the journey from your head to our heart. They explain that a meaningful life requires that you move out of your comfort zone. The film encourages you to live a life that matters to you, to show up.

Doors open at 9 a.m. The CoverGirls, a female rock violin group featured in the film, will perform and a professional photographer to take your premiere photo.

The film begins at 10 a.m., followed by a question-and-answer session at 11:30 a.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance by Oct. 14 or $15 at the event. For information and to purchase tickets, visit bit.ly/ShowingUpFilm.
