Glenbard District 87 webinar to help adults have meaningful conversations with teens

On Wednesday, March 16, the Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will present "14 Conversations You Need to Have by Age 14 (15, 16 and 17)!" with Michelle Icard.

The webinar will begin at noon and 7 p.m. via Zoom. Go to www.glenbardgps.org for the link to these webinars.

To be placed on a reminder list for GPS events or submit a question in advance, send an email to gilda_ross@glenbard.org.

At times, adults' best intentions are met with stone-cold resistance from adolescents. Because of a teen's neurological and developmental need to figure out who they are as an individual, breaking down communication is often a first step in this process.

Icard will share a model for overcoming language obstacles. Based on her book "Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen," Icard will guide adults past the challenges and fears of covering "the important stuff" and give them the confidence to have meaningful conversations with young people.

In addition to discussing dos and don'ts for communicating with adolescents, Icard will cover the specifics of what adults need to know on hot topics. This webinar will include the following topics: becoming independent, keeping creativity alive, taking care of yourself, living with technology, and helping others. Her presentation is appropriate for parents, guardians and educators of children ages 13 to 17.

Icard is the author of "Middle School Makeover: Improving the Way You and Your Child Experience the Middle School Years." Her middle school leadership programs, Athena's Path and Hero's Pursuit, have been implemented at schools across the country.

The Glenbard Parent Series is generously sponsored by the Cebrin Goodman Center, Community Consolidated School District 93 Birth to 5 Community Coalition, Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE), College of DuPage, DuPage Medical Group, Emmy Gaffey Foundation, Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Kiwanis Clubs of District 9, and Prevention Leadership Team of the DuPage County Health Department.
