Christ Church to perform Vivaldi's 'Gloria' at March 3 concert in Oak Brook

You don't have to be religious to recognize the melody of Vivaldi's "Gloria," long associated with sacred Christian events and music.

And there is no prerequisite for attending Christ Church's free performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at the church, 501 Oak Brook Road in Oak Brook.

"Gloria" is a masterwork in 12 movements by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741).

This inspirational and historic piece will be performed by a full choir, five outstanding professional soloists, and chamber orchestra with organ and harpsichord, conducted by Noelle Combs, director of classic worship and music.

"If you look forward to hearing Handel's glorious 'Messiah' every year (at Christ Church), you will certainly love this presentation of Vivaldi's magnificent and joyful masterwork, 'Gloria,'" Combs said.

The concert will also feature two of the most notable movements - "Dies Irae" and "Lacrymosa" from the universally beloved "Requiem" ("Mass for the Dead") by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as well as Mozart's "Regina Coeli" ("Queen of Heaven").

The entire program is free and open to the public.

Vivaldi's "Gloria" has become one of sacred Christian music's most revered and recognized compositions.

Composed between 1713-1719, Gloria is a hymn of praise, joy and worship.

Christ Church provides several free concert events throughout the year.
