Two Glenbard Parent Series programs Feb. 12 to focus on improved behavior

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the Glenbard Parent Series Navigating Healthy Families will present a day with investigative journalist Katherine Reynolds Lewis, author of "The Good News About Bad Behavior: Why Kids Are Less Disciplined Than Ever and What to Do About It."

Lewis will give these two presentations.

• "Why Won't Kids Do What You Want" will be offered at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Glenbard West High School, 670 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

Drawing on her personal experience, as well as the latest research on play, technology and failure, Lewis will share a new model of discipline and outline a theory that centers on listening and building a child's skills to address the root causes of misbehavior. Learn learn how you can help young people teens grow their independence, foster mental health and develop the motivation to behave well.

Parents and guardians will learn to respond to their children's misbehavior instead of reacting to it so that they get the results they want - children who are self-disciplined, confident and better equipped to handle life's challenges.

• "The Good News About Bad Behavior/Early Childhood" will be presented at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 12 at Marquardt School District 15 administration center, 1860 Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights. For this presentation, Lewis will address her remarks to parents, guardians and caregivers of children, age 3 to 10.

A recent study of first-graders found they could sit still for no more than three minutes, only a quarter of the time that their peers could in 1950. Master the skills to build self-control, strengthen empathy and connection, and peacefully resolve family conflict.
