ECC to host Sept. 15 fair with about a dozen historically black colleges and universities

On Saturday, Sept. 15, representatives from nearly a dozen Historically Black Colleges and Universities will be at Elgin Community College for the second annual HBCU fair. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Jobe Lounge, located in Building B, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

ECC's HBCU fair creates an environment that demonstrates community-wide and institutional support for all students and their aspirations, said Student Life Coordinator Brittany Barber, who is the creator and manager of the event.

"By showing students the full variety of educational options they have, we are empowering them with the resources and knowledge to make the best decision for themselves and their families. Our goal is to encourage students to recognize their bright and very possible futures."

ECC representatives will also be present to help students and families understand the academic, social and financial advantages of starting their educations at ECC and transferring to an HBCU after two years.

Alcorn University (MS), Benedict College (SC), Bowie State University (MD), Fisk University (TN), Grambling State University (LA), Livingstone College (NC), Morehouse College (GA), Morgan State University (MD), Spelman College (GA), South Carolina State University (SC) and Virginia State University (VA) will be in attendance.

The fair will also feature a panel of HBCU alumni who will share their experiences; a performance by the Proviso East High School Band of Maywood, IL; a live step show performance by the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; and on-site financial aid (FAFSA) assistance.

The event is sponsored by Elgin Community College, the United Negro College Fund, School District U-46, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, and two ECC student organizations: Black Student Achievers and the Organization of Latin American Students.

ECC Black Student Achievers (BSA) and the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) are partnering to sell "I Dream in Color" long sleeve T-shirts during the fair. Cost is $20 each. All proceeds go toward funding the student clubs' activities for the school year.
