Shaykh Mahmoud Ali leads a service at the Masjid Al Huda Midwest Islamic Center Friday, April 1, 2022 in Schaumburg. The first day of fasting for the Islamic holy month will begin Saturday or Sunday based on the lunar calendar and new moon sighting. This Ramadan, in-person services and breaking of the fasts together with family, friends and community members will resume more normally at Chicago-area mosques after two years of pandemic restrictions. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, revered by 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide. Muslims fast, abstaining from food, drink and sensual pleasures, engage in spiritual reflection and take part in charitable deeds in hopes of bettering themselves during this month.
