Pedal Power to host charity collection of bicycles

ELMHURST - The former Stemples Cycle Center will be used next month to host a charity collection of gently used, working bicycles for Pedal Power.

In addition to the Elmhurst collection, Pedal Power will also collect bikes at eight more collection sites in the Chicago area. Donated bikes are inspected and then given to Chicago Public School students in lower income areas as a reward for earning good grades.

New owners of the Stemples Cycle Center building, 494 Spring Road, have allowed it to be a collection site. The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 13.

Stemples closed in 2020 and the site was purchased by the owners of Roberto's Ristorante and Pizzeria across the street.

Pedal Power was created in 2008 by Nicole and Bennett Basil of Wilmette. Over the past 13 years, bike collection points have been established in Palatine, Libertyville, Glenview, Skokie, Northbrook, Lake Forest, Evanston, Winnetka and Wilmette.
