Painting nature classes to be held at St. Thomas

Summer's lazy days will soon yield center stage to fall and you may already be considering ways to exercise your artistic creativity. Why not indulge in "Painting Nature With Watercolor," a series of art classes that will capture fall's crisp segue into winter's brisk weather? The series will be held from 9 a.m. - noon on six Saturdays, beginning September 24, at the senior center in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville.

Acclaimed artist and illustrator Robert Sunyog will teach the series. A member of the Nature Art League at Morton Arboretum, he has taught several classes at St. Thomas in recent years and has been very well-received. His teaching approach is patient, gentle and encouraging.

Sunyog's lessons will cover sketching and then painting a nature scene; perspective; depth and distance; and mood and atmosphere. Sunyog adds, "I will share the best techniques for creating mountains, hills, trees, foliage, rocks, falls, lakes and fields."

Classes, sponsored by the Celebration of the Arts ministry of St. Thomas the Apostle, will be held on Saturdays September 24; October 1, 8, 22 and 29; and November 5. Because Sunyog's classes are so popular, registration for the series is highly recommended by Saturday, September 10.

Class size will be limited to the first 12 people who register in order to ensure individualized instruction. And the $70 fee for the series is a real bargain, so be sure to collect a registration form and supply list at the St. Thomas parish office as soon as possible.

Registration forms and supply lists also can be mailed to interested adults by contacting Anne Schultz, outreach and social justice partner, at (630) 355-8980, ext. 113, or at aschultz@stapostle.org. Schultz also may be contacted for further information on the series of art classes.

Completed registration forms, accompanied by a check of $70 for each registrant, should be sent to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Attn. Anne Schultz, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville, IL 60563. Checks should be made out to the church with "Art Class" listed on the memo line. Schultz also will accept E mail and phone reservations; checks for these reservations also should be mailed to her at the church.
