Girl Scout Cadette Lorena Miranda delivers care packages to Elgin police stations

Elgin, IL - Girl Scout Lorena Miranda of Algonquin recently delivered care packages of appreciation to Elgin area police stations.

Lorena has been a Girl Scout for six years. She, like many Girl Scouts, is grateful for people, such as police officers, who serve our country. As part of the Girl Scout Promise, each girl acknowledges the importance of service to country and community.

Lorena copes daily with the worry and concern of having a father who works as a police officer. She wanted to do something special for the officers working in her community. Lorena wanted to, "let the officers know people appreciate what they do for living." She crafted a plan to create packages of appreciation which included boxes of Girl Scout cookies along with a handmade card and personal letter of thanks. She created the packages and delivered them to seven Elgin area police stations. Lorena commented, "I was so nervous at the first station! The officers showed such thanks and seemed really touched by the care packages."

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois couldn't be more proud of the Lorena and the initiative she showed to make her community better.

When asked what she likes best about being a Girl Scout, Lorena says, "Helping people in need! I love seeing the smiles from the people at the pantry!" Lorena and her troop regularly volunteer at the food pantry. Lorena is making a difference in her community and is exemplifying the independence and confidence gained by being a Girl Scout.
