Couple of 60 years stay together thanks to The Springs At Monarch Landing

It's a four-minute walk from Shelly Appleton's apartment at Monarch Landing, to visit his wife Betty in assisted memory support at The Springs at Monarch Landing. "When I saw I could get the apartment that was closest to The Springs, I took it. I didn't look at any others. That was the whole ballgame," said Shelly. Although they live in different apartments, the couple of 60 years see each other for several hours everyday. "I love the proximity to her. It makes a big difference," Shelly said.

Monarch Landing is an independent living community in Naperville. The adjacent Springs at Monarch Landing, provides assisted living memory support, rehabilitation, respite and skilled nursing.

Until a year ago, the Appletons lived in independent living at another area senior living community. Betty was experiencing advancing dementia and was moved to the memory support floor. Shelly said that it was an unattractive environment that was overly restrictive, understaffed and lacking in programming. 'The residents would line up at the nurse's station at mealtime to get their medications. The atmosphere was like a hospital," he said. Shelly and his family decided that the couple would move, and started investigating other options."

When the family visited The Springs, they noticed immediately that the difference was dramatic. "This is so much better on every single level," said Shelly. The food, the activities, the choices … The staff is wonderful. They are so nice and go above and beyond when they absolutely don't need to. The Springs is an amazing place. Nothing else even comes close."

Shelly tends to have dinner with Betty every night, usually taking her to Monarch Landing's cafe. "She loves that. She says, 'We're so lucky to have such a nice restaurant so close by,'" Shelly said. He also takes her to activities and movies at Monarch Landing, and will bring her to use its pool.

At The Springs, Shelly said, Betty gets lots of loving attention, and the care that she needs. "The staff really connects with her. She often tells me how lucky she feels to be here."

The couple is exceptionally happy with their move. "We especially love it when in good weather we can sit outside here and hold hands and count the birds on the roof. It's lovely, and it feels like old times," Shelly said.
