Barrington Area Library Invites Community to Read, Remember, Reflect

Imagine if you woke up one day and had the power to change the course of world history by preventing a catastrophic event. That's exactly what happens to unassuming teacher Jake Epping in the novel 11/22/63 (New York : Scribner, 2011), by best-selling, master storyteller Stephen King. 11/22/63 has been selected as this year's Barrington Reads title at the Barrington Area Library. Everyone in the community is invited to read the book, and then attend special book discussions, lectures, and workshops around the novel and its themes. There will also be a fun, family-friendly sock hop to bring the community together.

Copies of 11/22/63 are on shelf right now at the library, but going fast, so reserve one today. King gives his protagonist the ability to alter events leading to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, so the library has lined up expert speakers to discuss Kennedy's presidency, the "Camelot" years, popular culture of the time, and the assassination itself. Learn about the Cuban Missile Crisis, Pierre Salinger, the Space Race, and how The Beatles helped a grieving nation to heal. Remember elegant first lady Jackie Kennedy with a special look at how she influenced fashion and style, and learn how to incorporate vintage style into your wardrobe and make-up with special workshops at Barrington boutiques.

In addition to serious discussion of this national tragedy and the novel it inspired, all are invited to a celebration of five years of Barrington Reads! On Friday, February 13, from 7-9 p.m., the Barrington Area Library will be transformed into a sock hop, with live music from Fast Eddie and The Convertibles, dance lessons from talented pros, retro snacks, crafts, and games, and a photo booth so you can snap a pic with some famous friends and take home a memory. All ages are welcome but you must register online at balibrary.org | barrington reads to attend. Snacks and seating are first come, first served, so arrive early and be prepared for an entertaining evening. It will make a great Valentine's celebration for families, too.

The first book discussion group meets on Saturday, February 7, at 2 p.m., with guest discussion leader Edith Maynard. Programs and events take place throughout the month of February, so visit the library website at balibrary.org and sign up for one -- or all -- today! All events are free and open to the public, and most take place at the newly renovated Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL.
