There's an old showbiz saying about never working with children or animals. I really should have listened. After trying to wrangle my dog Sophie and my daughter Lilly to hit their marks on our annual Christmas picture, I had more outtakes than keepers. In fact I had all outtakes and no keepers. Is it that hard to get a dog to wear a Santa saddled on her back and look like she's wrapping up my daughter as a present? Turns out it is.   "Red sky at night, sailor's delight". It's not often we can see a red sunset, but this photo was taken in the evening last July in Aurora.   Color determines the temperature and workability in the iron being forged by Ernie Klapmeier, a museum educator at Naper Settlement. I shot this photo for an early fall moving picture story when Klapmeier was bending iron into a hook, as he talked to students about the historical role of a blacksmith. I like the graphic qualities of this image, which has window light highlighting the hammer handle, and a 1/60th of a second shutter speed to show slight motion.
