Prospect prevails in this family affair

Jack Riedy couldn’t lose Tuesday night when he was watching the Prospect-Palatine girls volleyball match.

The Notre Dame freshman, in town from South Bend for semester break, saw his dad Mike coaching the Knights and his sister Caitlin setting for the Pirates.

Jack was there with his mom, Maria, and grandparents Mike and Pat.

“I don’t think a lot of them were rooting for me,” joked Mike Riedy, whose Knights won the Mid-Suburban League crossover 25-21, 25-22 at Palatine.

Helping to lead the way for Prospect was senior middle hitter Allie Skowron, who collected 6 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces.

“Allie had the match of her life,” Mike Riedy said. “She hit .625.”

Michelle Haaning chipped in 5 kills and 9 assists for Prospect (11-18) while Rachel Grippo served an ace. Sarah Cutaia had 8 digs and Haaning 5 for Prospect.

“It was kind of strange with everyone there,” Mike Riedy said. “And Dan Gavin’s (Palatine head coach) father was there. So it was a real family affair.”

Buffalo Grove d. Fremd: Senior Alaina Murphy had a match-high 14 kills and 13 digs while classmate Sarah Rivera added 9 kills and 7 digs for visiting Buffalo Grove in a 25-20, 21-25, 25-15 victory.

Marie Georgoulis handed out 13 assists and Leah Masciopinto collected 7 digs.

Meghan Chartier and Celine Murphy each served 2 aces for BG while Katelyn Sommers, Rivera and Teagan Hutchings each had 1.

Ari Messner (9 kills), Maise Koo (4 kills) and Carly Roberts (3 kills) led the attack for Fremd (17-12) which received 2 aces from Sarah Roberts and 3 blocks form Hope Schroeder. Carly Roberts (13 assists) and Jackie Mursuli (9 assists, 12 digs) set the offense. Aubrey Stegich added 10 digs.

Schaumburg d. Wheeling: Kiana Lewis (13 kills), Abbie Rahn (8) and Oyinkan Akinola (5) led host Schaumburg in a 25-19, 28-30, 25-19 victory.

The Saxons (21-13) also received 17 digs by Sarah Stuehm. Lewis had 11 and Jada Blackwell 10 along with her 21 setting assists and 12-of-13 serving. Megan Hayes added 6 assists for the Saxons.

Amber Lindfors (3 blocks) put down 9 kills for the Grens (15-17) while Melissa Solorio and Taylor Socha each added 5.

Becca Maher had 2 aces while Solorio and Celina Wlodarski had 1 apiece. Kelly Souder handed out 18 assists. Kelly Regan had 14 digs and Maher 12.

Wheeling d. Hoffman Estes; Haley Singer (5 kills) and Elizabeth Smith (4) led visiting Wheeling (5-25) to the 26-24, 25-21 victory. Alexa Laureno had 15 digs while Deanna Kuzmanic added 14 with 7 assists. Sabrina Semeria added 10 assists.

Hoffman (7-27) was paced on attack by Sarah Wille (7 kills) and Clare Shaffer (6 kills), who also had 11 digs.

Benet d. St. Viator: Benet defeated host St. Viator 25-12, 25-16 as Megan Mueller (7 kills) and Mary Cleary (4 kills, 2 block) led the Lions’ attack.

Molly Ziegler collected 15 assists, 10 digs and 3 kills for the Lions (17-15).

Hinsdale South d. Leyden: VisitingHinsdale South won 19-25, 20-25 as senior outside hitter Kelly Murphy led the Eagles with 8 kills.
