Monday's Fox Valley roundup

Jacobs played to a 5-5 draw in Monday's opening game of the Big League Dugout National Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) scored a run in the seventh inning to tie the game, which was halted after seven innings due to tournament time limits.

Josh Kranz hit a 2-run home run and Anthony Virgilio and Ben Albano each doubled for Jacobs (2-0-1).

"We let it slip away when they scored late, but we fought to keep it right there," Jacobs coach Eric Sanders said.

The Golden Eagles resume tournament play today at 1:30 p.m. against Rocky Mountain, a three-time state champion from Colorado.

Huntley 10, Marengo 0: The Red Raiders allowed only 1 hit in a nonconference home victory. Sophomore right-hander Justin Gundulach (1-0) limited the Indians to 1 hit, walked none and struck out 5 in 5 innings pitched. Senior Chris Klein went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, Matt Szytz went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI and Tom Crohan finished 1-for-2, drove in a run and scored twice for Huntley (3-0).

Burlington Central 9, DeKalb 0: Senior catcher Austin Jarvis (3-for-4, 4 RBI) hit his fourth home run in 5 games, and pitcher Luke Fleming held the Barbs to 2 hits in 5 innings to lift the Rockets to a 5-0 record. Sophomore Ray Hunnicutt doubled and homered and Nick Hahn and Drew Stover hit doubles for Burlington Central.

St. Edward 8, Lisle 2: Jordan Torres (3-for-4, 3B, RBI), Jack Sutherland (3-for-4, 2 doubles), John Godfrey (2-for-4, 2B) and David Hoebbel (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) led an 11-hit attack, and pitcher Luke Duffy (1-1) held the Lions to 3 hits and struck out 4 in 6 innings as the Green Wave prevailed in a nonconference game at Wing Park in Elgin. The Wave played an errorless game in the field.

"The difference in the game was pitching and defense," said St. Edward coach Gene Belmonte.

West Chicago 5, Streamwood 4: The Sabres fell in nonconference play after failing to hold two separate leads. West Chicago scored twice in the sixth inning to over come a 3-2 deficit, tacked on another run in the seventh and held on for the win despite a Streamwood marker in the bottom of the seventh.

"Tough loss," Sabres coach Steve Diversey said. "We had the lead and we got complacent. To be a good team we need to keep the on switch on."

Junior catcher Tim Cohen (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and senior Mike Diebold (2-for-4, 2 runs) were the hitting leaders for Streamwood (2-3).
