Film series: Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church will hold its free "Second Friday" film series at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, sponsored by the church's Adult Faith Development Council. "The Miraculous World of the Very Small" is the general topic, consisting of three medium-length films interspersed with lighter short segments. They will show fungi, bacteria and tiny engines inside every cell of our bodies and present the questions: What can we learn from them? Musical 'Mountain': The Broadway-style musical drama "Mountain" will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 W. Golf Road, Mount Prospect. An eight-member cast will perform the musical as part of a 25-city Midwest tour. "Mountain" is the story of an NFL-bound star quarterback who is seriously injured in the final quarter of his last game of the season. He forgoes risky surgery and travels to Appalachia to teach in the mountains. When a local mayor forbids him to teach anything but the Bible, he uses the Sermon on the Mount as his text. Shabbat and Simchat Torah: Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, will celebrate the holidays of Shabbat and Simchat Torah beginning with dinner at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, followed by a service at 8 p.m. featuring members of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band and the unrolling of the entire Torah scroll. Crafters wanted: The United Methodist Women of Kingswood UMC in Buffalo Grove is seeking crafters of all types for the church's fall Harvest Fest Fair Saturday, Oct. 10. Simchat Torah: At 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove, will hold its Annual Simchat Torah Flag Procession and Taffy Apple Party in the synagogue's Main Sanctuary, directly after a 6:30 p.m. Minyan Prayer Service. Those present will then be able to participate in the 'Hakafot' (processions) with the Torah scrolls and join in the singing and dancing. After the Flag Parade, the Consecration of the 2009-2010 Kindergarten Class will take place. Fall fiesta: Hope Lutheran Church, Checker and Arlington Heights roads, Long Grove, will be celebrating a Fall Fiesta from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, to support youth and adult mission trips. The Hispanic-themed evening will include a taco bar with chips, salsa and other appetizers. Olive trees for hope: The Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Barrington, in collaboration with the Environmental Education Center of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, plans to offer a peaceful, green response to the violence in the Middle East by assisting in an ongoing project of "Planting New Olive Trees . . . Planting New Hope." Members of Atonement will be planting olive trees in November while making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This simple act of planting new olive trees in areas around Jerusalem and Bethlehem will help to reforest lost olive groves and provide years of tangible support to local farmers who suffer daily trauma as the cycle of violence continues. Catholic festival: Men and women in their 20s and 30s are invited to a special conference designed exclusively for them within the larger 2009 Catholic Festival of Faith. The Young Adult Track will take place Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning with a special opening event called "In the Spotlight" at 10 a.m. The conference will feature young adult-focused workshops, networking opportunities and chances for prayer and spirituality. The day will conclude with weekend Mass at 5 p.m., a liturgical experience aimed specifically at young adults and married couples. A Young Adult Dinner & Party follows the Mass. Pumpkin patch: The sixth annual Pumpkin Patch will be from Oct. 17-31 at Park Ridge Community Church, located on the church lawn at Prospect and Crescent avenues in Park Ridge. Worship for Shut-Ins: "The Kingdom Is Yours" is the title of the Rev. Richard Mau's message, which will be aired on the television program "Worship for Shut-Ins" at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, on the Total Living Network (TLN). Hugh Brady, the president of the Barrington Area Chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and the vice president of NAMI Illinois, will discuss the impact of mental illness on families, the quality and funding of mental health programs in Illinois, and the help and services that NAMI provides.
