Spaghetti dinner: Immanuel United Church of Christ, 415 W. North Ave, Bartlett, will host a spaghetti dinner in conjunction with the village's tree-lighting ceremony. Men's spirituality: Jewish men exploring their spirituality are the focus of the weekend "Getting to God." Led by Rabbi Marc J. Belgrad, the program offers time away from day-to-day pressures and concerns in combination with specially-designed opportunities to talk about faith, doubt and what it means to be a spiritual man in today's world. Dec. 5

Holiday Shop: Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett will host a Holiday Shop from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 5. Vendors and products will include Melaleuca, Lia Sophia, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, Party Lite, Makeovers Inc., Upper Case Living, children's books, yummy treats, and more. Cookies and crafts: The 21st annual Cookie Walk and Craft Show at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. There will be a variety of homemade cookies to buy. All proceeds will benefit the educational programs at the church. There will also be an assortment of vendors. The church is at 751 W. Army Trail Road in Bartlett (corner of Petersdorf and Army Trail Road). Free admission and parking.

Bethlehem Marketplace: First United Methodist Church of Palatine will present Bethlehem Marketplace & Live Nativity Saturday, Dec 5, at the fellowship hall, 123 N. Plum Grove Road, Palatine. Bethlehem Marketplace & Live Nativity hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children and their families may make crafts such as baskets, leatherwork, candles, metalwork, jewelry and more. New this year are posters explaining life of people in this era. Children may read the signs and then demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge to a Village Elder, who will reward them with a token for a craft or food. Bags of Roman coins may be purchased to exchange for crafts. Small bags, which are good for five to seven crafts, are $6 and large bags, 8-11 crafts, are $9. Rachel's Inn will sell homemade lentil soup, fresh-baked flatbread with honey, fruit, fudge, humus and chips. A small skit takes place where King Herod interrogates three traveling wise men about the whereabouts of a newborn king they're seeking. The guests are then invited to follow the wise men to where the new babe lies in the Live Nativity.

Cookie Walk: The Presbyterian Church, at Palatine and Rohlwing roads in Palatine, will have its annual Cookie Walk Saturday, Dec. 5. Pick your own homemade cookies. Doors open at 9 a.m., sale begins at 9:30 a.m. All proceeds support mission projects.

Holiday Open House: Gifts of the World store, managed by Christ Commuinity Mennonite Church, 888 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, hosts a Holiday Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. Items from 38 countries are from Ten Thousand Villages and Serrv International, two of the world's oldest and largest fair trade organizations. Holy Land Experience: A Night in Bethlehem, a hands-on "Holy Land Experience," will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 1001 W. Kirchoff, Arlington Heights. The experience includes the opportunity to "visit" Bethlehem's bustling marketplace, complete with a toy making shop, bakery, pottery and a scribe. Visitors can stop at the painting shop to decorate a family ornament, talk with a census taker, Roman soldiers and hear a story from a group of shepherds. Best of all, a young couple in a stable will share their story of the birth of Jesus. Admission is free; however, registration is required and must be submitted by Dec. 5. Sermon series: Christ Presbyterian Church (USA) continues the Advent season with the second in a series of messages based on the Gospel of John and the "I am" statements of Jesus: "I am the living bread," by the Rev. Benefit concert: On Sunday, Dec. 6, Peter Mayer, lead guitarist with Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, will bring his band, The Peter Mayer Group, to Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett for his "Stars & Promises: Sing Joy!" Christmas Concert. The concert will help raise money for the Lutheran Malaria Initiative, a five-year effort to eliminate malaria in south Saharan Africa by 2015. Blue Nativity: Quest Theatre Ensemble, the People's Theatre of Chicago, will celebrate the holiday season with its eighth annual production of Blue Nativity with a local performance at 5 p.m. Dec. 6 at First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, 1903 E. Euclid Ave. For details, call (847) 255-5112 or visit www.fumcah.com. Blue Nativity tells the true story of Christmas and the birth of Christ with large-scale puppetry and accompanying live music. The 31-minute show includes 10 puppeteers playing 28 larger-than-life puppets, as well as a singer who narrates the show with Christmas carols, accompanied by an acoustic guitar. There is no dialogue. Blue Nativity is suitable for an audience of all ages. Following the free performance, a seated dinner will be served in the fellowship hall of the church. Giving tree: The Church's Mission Committee at Prince of Peace Church, corner of Arlington Heights Road and Devon Avenue in Elk Grove Village, is sponsoring a Giving Tree, an annual event that provides Christmas gifts to people whose Christmas might not include gifts this year. The tree will be set up Dec. 6, decorated with tags offering gift suggestions for members. The gifts are returned to church Dec. 13.

Concert: The Mount Prospect Community Band will present "Make a Joyful Noise!" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, as the final event of the Mount Prospect holiday festival weekend. This free concert is sponsored by the Fine Arts Committee of Trinity United Methodist Church and is held in conjunction with the Trinity United Methodist Women's annual Christmas Cookie Walk at the church, 605 W. Golf Road, Mount Prospect. This concert will also feature selections from "The Nutcracker Ballet Suite" by Tchaikovsky. A freewill offering will be taken at the concert to support A Journey from PADS to HOPE, the program in which local churches provide shelter for the homeless.

Jewish Holiday Concert: On Sunday, Dec. 6, Torah Academy of Buffalo Grove presents a Jewish Community Holiday Concert featuring "even sh'siyah," "The Way Jews Rock." Preparing for Christmas: "Prepare" is the sermon topic for 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 1001 W. Kirchoff Road, Arlington Heights. The worship celebrates the preparations for Christmas Day and includes an Advent candle-lighting ceremony. School-age children will participate in the candle-lighting service and adjourn to church school classes during the balance of the service. Christ in Christmas: "It's all about Christmas" is the theme each Sunday during the Christmas season at Elk Grove Baptist Church. These sermons use passages from 2nd Timothy as the introduction for listeners to "see that the Scriptures point us to the Christ who was born in Bethlehem." The sermons will be the keynote of the services, which begin at 9:30 a.m. Following the worship celebration in December, at 11 a.m., EGBC will hold a multi-generational, family-oriented Bible study titled "The Purpose of Christmas." Torch Run: Guadalupana Torch Run will be Thursday and Friday, Dec. 11-12. Fr. Miguel Martinez will bless the torches that hundreds of people representing Hispanic parishes throughout the Archdiocese will carry in a run from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1150 N. River Road, Des Plaines, to their respective parishes. Opening Mass is at 8 p.m., run at 10:30 p.m., with MaƱanitas at midnight. Runners will pass through the suburbs of Rosemont, Schiller Park, River Grove, Elmwood Park and several other Chicago neighborhoods. Upon arriving at their parishes, runners will place the torch at a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the "maƱanitas" (songs that honor Mary, the Mother of God) will be sung, followed by Mass at approximately 5 a.m.

Drum circle: Unity Northwest Church, 259 E. Central Road, Des Plaines, will host a Drum Circle at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11. Bring your own drum or percussive instrument, or one will be provided for you.

Living Christmas Tree: Community Presbyterian Church, 407 N. Main St. at Gregory, Mount Prospect, will host a Living Christmas Tree Concert in the sanctuary at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11-13. A special performance will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec 11, for residents of local area nursing and retirement homes. Christmas caroling: The Elk Grove Baptist Church choir will spend the Christmas season caroling at various community businesses. On Saturday, Dec. 12, the choir will carol in the lobby of the Elk Grove Village Library at 10 a.m., then proceed to Alexian Village and Manor Care living facilities. The choir will present carols in traditional arrangements, modern renditions and include sing-along opportunities. Kadima is the youth group for students in sixth through eighth grades. Kadima meets once or twice a month. Yearly dues are $35. United Synagogue Youth is the youth group for all high school students. For young families: The Families with Young Children Committee at Congregation Beth Judea will be holding its regular services at 6:30 p.m. the second Friday of the month, with a 30-minute Tot Shabbat session with Debbie Frager, a teacher in the BJE-ECC (Board of Jewish Education Early Childhood Centers), who is also a Beth Judea congregant. The group will then enjoy their own Oneg Shabbat. In addition, Gan Shabbat, a program for children and their families, will meet every Shabbat morning in the Beit Midrash on the Religious School level.
