Wrap-up: Cary-Grove, BC, Whips win

What was a close girls volleyball match Tuesday quickly turned into a rout.

Cary-Grove held a 1-point lead midway through Game 1 against Dundee-Crown then scored 21 of the next 23 points to beat the Chargers, 25-16, 25-10, in Carpentersville.

"We were just going along for a ride," Trojans coach Patty Langanis said.

"Dundee-Crown is dangerous and if you sit with them too long they'll get rolling. We tried to pick up our intensity levels."

Neither team led the opening game by more than three points until the Trojans (25-6, 5-2 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division) went on an 8-0 run after leading 15-14. C-G freshman Kelly Lamberti had 4 kills during that stretch. A service error ended the streak, but two serving errors by the Chargers (16-6, 4-3) gave Cary-Grove the Game 1 victory.

"Solid play for 14 points, then all of the sudden we shut down," Chargers coach Tracy Williams said.

"Nothing goes our way, make a few mistakes and it just snow balls."

The Trojans' sophomore setter Abbey Heredia used some tough serving to collect all of her match-high 5 aces as Cary-Grove opened an 11-0 lead in the second game.

D-C's Amanda Lutzow ended the run with a kill, but by then it was too late. The closest the Chargers got in Game 2 was 12-5.

A kill by Jamie Kuhl, who also had a match-high 7 blocks, on match point capped the Trojans' victory.

"We're getting more aggressive with our serving and as our blocking gets more consistent, we're able to get runs of points," Langanis said. "At the beginning of the year, we were having a hard time stringing together points."

Lamberti and Danielle Smith each had 6 kills for Cary-Grove. Heredia finished with 15 assists to go along with her 5 aces. Erin Wahl had 14 digs.

The Chargers, who usually spread the ball around, were unable to do so in this match. Lutzow was the only D-C player with more than 2 kills. The senior finished with 6. Kathleen Collingbourne had 6 digs.

"We didn't use everyone tonight," Williams said.

"We're a much better team than that."
