Teens charged in burglary:
Two teenagers were charged with residential burglary following an incident in the 200 block of South Villa Avenue, Villa Park police said Wednesday. Police said the teens entered an occupied apartment Monday afternoon, stole a purse and then fled. Both a 16-year-old from Glendale Heights and Christian Williams, 17, of 6353 S. Parnell Ave., Chicago, were charged with residential burglary. Williams also was charged with battery for allegedly hitting one of the tenants and is being held on $75,000 bond in DuPage County jail, police said. The 16-year-old was transported to the DuPage County Youth Home.
Naperville increases parking:
Nearly 100 new daily fee parking spaces will be available to commuters at the downtown Naperville train station beginning July 20. The spaces will be available on the site of the city's former public works building. A map detailing the location is available on the city's Web site at www.naperville.il.us/commuterparking.aspx. The daily fee pay stations are located on the platforms of the downtown station.
Dist. 88 board vacancy:
The DuPage High School District 88 board of education is seeking applications until noon July 31 to fill a vacancy created last week following the resignation of Paul Habel. The new board member will serve until the next election in April 2011. All applicants must be 18 or older, an Illinois and District 88 resident for at least a year and a registered voter. The board will conduct interviews on Aug. 4 and announce the appointment at a meeting on Aug. 24.
NCTV17 to cover games:
Naperville Community Television Channel 17 will have a full crew out to tape the Naperville Little League Major and A-League Championship games on July 18 at Knoch Park, Field 8. The production will be hosted by Jeff Mahoney, sports broadcaster for NCTV17's "Naperville Sports Weekly" with Little League's Tom Rossi also in the booth to add commentary for both games. The games will air numerous times on Channel 17 and online at www.NCTV17.com.
Pastor to be honored:
The Rev. Paul Hernandez will celebrate 50 years in Christian ministry and his 75th birthday at a dinner and service in his honor at 7 p.m. July 18 at the Eola Community Center, 555 Eola Road, Aurora. Hernandez had planned to pursue a medical career, but gave it up to follow what he felt was a divine calling to ministry. The celebration is sponsored by Jesucristo Es La Verdad, a charismatic church in Aurora where Hernandez has served as director and main professor for the School of Ministry since 1996. He also serves on the board of Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity in Aurora.
Battle of the Bands on tap:
Musicians ages 13 to 19 have until July 31 to register for Fox Valley Park District's first "Battle of the Bands." Interested bands need to submit an entry form, a CD of three songs and a copy of the lyrics for each song. Applicants will be notified by the end of August whether they have been selected for the competition that will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora.
