Wrap-up: Fremd's win solid; Hersey clinches East

It doesn't seem as if anyone in the near future is going to challenge the Barrington girls swimming team in the Mid-Suburban League West.

Most people would put their money on the Fillies -- if betting were allowed -- when asked it Barrington will win its 16th consecutive conference championship.

The one team that always seems to challenge Barrington is Fremd -- but the Vikings always seem to come up two or three swimmers short.

Hoffman Estates is doing its best to become competitive, with eight seniors on varsity and eight freshmen on JV.

But the Hawks are not only behind Barrington, they are also still chasing Fremd.

The host Vikings dominated their dual meet Thursday, beating the Hawks 149-34 by finishing first in all 12 events.

"They're extremely tired like every other team in the MSL and in the state," said Fremd coach Andy Larson. "We're just trying to rest some of them down."

Fremd senior Nika Lauraitis won all four of her events -- the 50-meter free (29.88); the 100 backstroke (1:12.99); and legs on the winning 200 medley relay (2:16.90) with Rachel Allen, Abby Krueger and Kirsten Lentz; and the 200 free relay (2:02.28) with Alex Gunko, Krysti Ruiz and Kristine Williams.

Fremd has one dual meet left before the MSL meet and will shortly start training for the postseason.

Hoffman has one dual left, against Vernon Hills at home Tuesday on senior night.

"They've improved just as we planned out for the season," said Hawks coach Josh Schumacher. "We're at the point of the season where we're real tired. We came to this meet and mixed it up. This is sort of a fun meet. They chose their events."

Hersey clinches MSL East: Sweeping all 12 events, Hersey overwhelmed visiting Elk Grove 140-41 to capture the Mid-Suburban League East Division title. Meredith Wellhausen helped lead the Huskies (8-0, 5-0) with individual victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.
