Quinn, Fillies top Yoo, Conant at Bonnie Dundee in C'ville
A couple of future Big Ten girls golfers battled head-to-head Monday at the Bonnie Dundee Golf Course in Carpentersville - as well as a couple of undefeated Mid-Suburban League teams.
When it was over, University of Minnesota-bound Taylor Quinn and her Barrington Fillies remained undefeated (6-0) in the conference, while Wisconsin-bound Kris Yoo and her Conant Cougars (6-1) lost for the first time.
Yoo, the defending Class 4A state champion, fired her best MSL round this fall with a two-under 33, while Quinn's 36 on the front nine was her season best.
"Kris (third place in the MSL meet last fall) is playing so well now and I give her all the credit in the world," said Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck.
Fillies junior Kelly Muskrat (39) tied her season best, and senior Emily Rebmann (46) fired her season low to the lead host Barrington to a 167 and victories over Conant (178) and Schaumburg (225).
The Fillies have another big meet at Bonnie Dundee against Prospect (7-0) on Thursday.
"We are hoping to get through the sectional this year and go to state as a team, which we didn't do last year," said Quinn, the defending MSL champion whose round included a nifty sand save on No. 7 and a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole.
"It was definitely an honor to play with Kris. We played this summer and we talked the whole round and just have a lot of fun. We very excited about seeing each other when we play in the Big Ten."
Yoo plans to study education, while Quinn is looking toward a business major.
Yoo was business as usual as she recorded her second-best round of the season. She fired a 32 earlier this fall at Medinah Country Club in the York tournament.
Yoo collected 3 birdies (Nos. 2, 5 and 6) and had a bogey while hitting all the fairways and putting 16 times.
"The greens were just aerated so putting could not be quite on target, but Kris kept to it real well," said Conant coach Diana Johanneson.
Conant's Sammie Caravette (47), Stacie Boskelly (49), Jackie Halden and Alex Swezey (49) all shot season lows.
"We have a busy week, so the girls worked real hard with their drives at the range and on fundamentals with their swings," Johanneson said about the Cougars' season-low team score of 178. "Our coaches were wonderful. We knew this was a big week ands we wanted to beat our previous low of 180. The girls did a great job."
In addition to a perfect 6-0 record in meets, Schoeck has also watched her Fillies win two invites and place second and third in two others this fall.
"This meet (Monday) was an opportunity to put ourselves in a strong position in the conference, and now we get to play on our home course again Thursday (against Prospect)," Schoeck said.
Schaumburg's top golfers on Monday were Sam Ring (53) and Emily Santucci (55).
