Trojans bounce back for win

It only took Jacobs 2 minutes to send Cary-Grove into unfamiliar territory.

Golden Eagles' forward Sam McKee stole the ball from Cary-Grove, drove down the field and scored just 2 minutes into Thursday night's Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys soccer game in Algonquin.

Despite not trailing all season, the Trojans did learn one thing from McKee's goal - they can bounce back.

Cary-Grove scored 5 times, including tying the game 2 minutes after McKee's goal, to take a 5-2 victory.

"That was a huge key to the game," said Trojans' forward Nick McDonald, who tied the game at 1. "A lot of teams get down, and it's hard to get back. We just put (McKee's goal) behind us right away."

McDonald's first-half efforts helped erase the memory.

After tying the game, McDonald gave the Trojans (6-0, 1-0) a 2-1 advantage with 27 minutes left to play. Both times he was assisted by senior forward Calvin Brown. McDonald, who now has 11 goals on the year, added the lone goal of the second half to finish with a hat trick. Brown added a goal and 2 assists.

"I give them a lot of credit for being down and tying it up," Trojans' coach Mark Olson said. "They said no matter what are we going to do it. They didn't give up."

Neither did Jacobs (2-1-1, 0-1).

After Phillip Hansen (unassisted) put Cary-Grove up 3-1 with 13:33 left in the first half, Mike Wallace responded for the Golden Eagles. Wallace sprinted past the Cary-Grove defense and beat Trojans' goalie Ben Alleva (9 saves) to bring Jacobs to 3-2.

The momentum was short-lived. Brown widened the margin with 4:36 left in the first half when he took a pass from C.J. Arenberg and sailed it past Jacobs' goalie Danny Trevor (6 saves) to put the Trojans up 4-2 going into halftime.

McDonald (John Oberlies) scored the lone goal in the second half with 13:03 remaining. McDonald's goal came despite the fact that Jacobs outshot the Trojans 6-3 in the second half.

"We had our opportunities and got some looks," Jacobs' coach Jim Dzialo said. "We created a lot in the first half, we just didn't put enough away."

"We had a few more chances we took advantage of," Olson said. "Whenever we play Jacobs, there is a ton of shots."
