Cary-Grove makes it 4 straight
Last week it was sophomore Ryan Mahoney who ran roughshod over Jacobs.
This week it was Mahoney's sophomore running mate Patrick O'Malley's turn to shine.
Rushing for 102 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns, O'Malley led the Trojans to a 28-6 win over Huntley in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game at Cary-Grove's Al Bohrer Field Friday night.
"The offensive line was outstanding," said O'Malley. "They opened big holes and gave me a lot of room to run. Corey (Laktas) also did a great job of reading the defense."
Cary-Grove veteran coach Bruce Kay praised O'Malley's efforts.
"Patrick had a great game and really ran hard," said Kay. "Huntley's defense did a great job of keying Ryan to the outside and that gave us room inside for Patrick to run."
Nursing a slim 14-6 lead after 3 quarters of play, the Trojans finally seized control of the game with 2 scores in a 1 minute and 48 second span.
O'Malley scored his third touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run with 11:56 remaining to give the Trojans a 21-6 lead.
On Huntley's first play after the kickoff, quarterback Tim Lycos rolled to the right and lofted a ball to the right flat. Cary-Grove senior defensive back Danny Sarillo broke in front of the Huntley receiver and picked off Lycos' pass at the Red Raider 22-yard line.
On the next play, Laktas dropped back and threw a perfect strike to Chris Leach for a 22-yard score to give the Trojans a 28-6 lead with 10:08 left.
Cary-Grove scored first when O'Malley scored from 2 yards out with 7:33 left to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead.
Huntley responded with an 18 play, 80-yard drive that ate up 9 minutes and 51 seconds. With 4 third-down conversions, Lycos scored from 3 yards out to pull Huntley within a point, 7-6, after the kick failed with 9:42 left in the first half.
The Trojans stiffened and blanked the Red Raiders (3-3, 1-1) in the final 33:42 of the game.
"We made the adjustments after the first drive and we did a better job with containment," said Sarillo. "It is fun playing with the younger players and they are getting better every game."
Lycos, who ran for 28 yards, completed 5-of-13 passes with 2 interceptions and 67 yards.
"It's hard because we were right there in the game in the fourth quarter against a quality team," said Huntley coach Matt Gehrig. "The kids played very hard, but we had some key breakdowns. You can't do that against a team like Cary-Grove."
