Mundelein's Heelan wins Hawthorn invite
Extremely gusty winds didn't effect Mundelein golfer Grant Heelan on Tuesday.
Heelan played extremely well.
The sophomore won the Hawthorn Invitational at Hawthorn Woods Country Club, shooting a 72 to beat runner-up Tony Albano of Maine South by 4 strokes.
Lake Zurich's duo of Mike Nutter and Doug Murphy tied for third, as each shot a 77. Grayslake North's Matt Bergstrom, Maine South's Blake Wlodarski and Stevenson's Ryan Prince all carded 78s.
Vernon Hills received 80s from Kris McGovern and Eric Swanson, while Stevenson's Landon Kowalski and Grayslake North's Mike Gruzalski both came in with 81s.
Maine South shot a winning 319, four strokes better than Stevenson. Lake Zurich (330), Vernon Hills (330) and Mundelein (331) rounded out the top five among eight schools.
Warren d. Zion-Benton: At Bittersweet, the Blue Devils won the North Suburban Lake match with a 184, six shots better than the Zee-Bees.
Warren's Harrison Chiesa was medalist with a 45.
Girls golfCarmel d. Palatine: At Countryside, Jess Trunzo shot a 48, as the Corsairs notched their first win.Carmel's 201 edged Palatine by three strokes. The Corsairs also got solid play from Delaney Hunt (50), Bella Bagshaw (51) and Carly Bushman (52).Mundelein d. Vernon Hills: At Countryside, Alex Maple's 43 led the Mustangs, who shot a school-record 181 to defeat the Cougars (190).Mundelein also got sub-50 scores from Courteney Fabbri (44), Emily Whitemarsh (45), Holly Gotlund (49) and Cristina Loverde (49).Vernon Hills' Lauren Groody had a 45, while Lydia Flynn (47) and Anya Mollenhauer (48) also broke 50.Stevenson d. Lake Zurich: At Crane's Landing, Nicole Crosby was medalist with a 38, as she led the Patriots (169) to victory over the Bears (226).Stephanie Miller and Nikki Marquardt each shot 40 for Stevenson (4-0, 3-0 North Suburban Conference).Lake Zurich received matching 53s from Gina McCoy and Lisa Kowieski.
