Local schools make Newsweek's best list

Each year, Newsweek magazine picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests.

Just over 1,600 schools - 6 percent of all the public schools in the United States - made the list. Among schools in the northern Cook County area that made the list and their rank are: Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire (167); Prospect High School, Prospect Heights (460); Hersey High School, Arlington Heights (513); Barrington High School, Barrington (653); Elk Grove High School, Elk Grove Village (739); Glenbrook South High School, Glenview (766); New Trier High School, Winnetka (802); Glenbrook North High School, Northbrook (807); Buffalo Grove High School, Buffalo Grove (861); Maine Township East High School, Park Ridge (1,064); Conant High School, Hoffman Estates (1,235); Hoffman Estates High School, Hoffman Estates (1,229); Palatine High School, Palatine (1,214); Schaumburg High School, Schaumburg (1,536), and Lake Park High School, Roselle (1,568).
