Cary-Grove advances to regional final
Class 4A Cary-Grove regional: Cary-Grove junior Kevin Weber tossed a complete-game 4-hitter with 10 strikeouts to beat Conant 6-1 in a regional semifinal.
The Trojans (23-11) advance to Saturday's regional title game at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of today's semifinal between McHenry and Hoffman Estates.
Conant took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on 2 singles and a walk, but Cary-Grove scored twice in the bottom half to take the lead for good. After 3 walks to load the bases, Steve Mihalik hit a bad-hop single to drive in a pair.
The Trojans added a run in the fifth and 3 runs in the sixth, a rally keyed by senior Eric Chandler's 2-run single with a 2-strike count.
"This game had a real tournament feel to it - a little tension and just heightened awareness," Cary-Grove Don Sutherland said. "And Kevin pitched a gem again."
