St. Edward wears crown at Dakota

The St. Edward girls basketball team couldn't ask for any more momentum than it has right now, and right now is when it's needed.

The Green Wave won two more games Saturday to finish the Dakota Thanksgiving Tournament 5-0, winning the championship for the first time.

After handling River Ridge 49-26 in its first game of the day, the Wave came back and knocked off Class 1A No. 2 Freeport Aquin 50-41 in the championship game.

"We had a great day today," said St. Edward coach Michelle Dawson. "Both games were absolutely team wins. Aquin's a team that's not going to go away and they made a couple runs at us but we were able to keep our composure and withstand them.

"Our defense really carried us through. Our girls kept their composure and we had a good tournament all the way around."

Callie Johnson had 19 points to lead the way against River Ridge, while Alex Lee added 12 and Maddie Kerr had 10. Against Aquin, Rena Ranallo had 13 points with Johnson and Kerr adding 10 each. Katherine Von Ahnen had 8 points in the title game. Kerr was named to the all-tournament team.

St. Edward will take its momentum from Dakota into its home opener Tuesday night against Montini. The defending 3A state champs are ranked No. 2 in the Daily Herald Top 20 but lost to Geneva Saturday 45-42.
