Smith, Vernon Hills roll to tourney title
Sophomore guard Sydney Smith scored 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, as Vernon Hills' girls basketball team won its own season-opening tournament by beating Woodstock North 69-35.
The win for the Cougars (4-0) avenged last season's loss to the Thunder in the championship game.
Meri Bennett-Swanson added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for Vernon Hills, while Abby Springer contributed 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Woodstock North finished 3-1 in the tournament.
Libertyville 47, Barrington 33: At Maine South, Alex Haley scored a career-high 25 points, as the Wildcats improved to 3-0 in the Buffalo Grove tournament.
The Minot State-bound Haley, who's a three-year varsity starter, sank 8 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, from the floor.
Libertyville also received 8 points apiece from Eileen Knauff and Nicole Kruckman.
Cary-Grove 54, Lakes 42: At Lake Zurich, Terese McMahon 21 points for the Eagles, who fell to 0-4. Amanda Smith added 12 points for Lakes, and Ashlee Cunningham scored eight.
Montini 64, Antioch 38: At Geneva, Megan Borries scored 17 points, sinking five 3-pointers, for the Sequoits, while Brittany Kelly added 9 points and 5 rebounds.
Antioch (0-2) led the defending state champs, the No-1 ranked team in Class 3A, 3-2 before Montini went on a 17-7 run to close out the opening quarter.
"Montini's size was tough to overcome," Antioch coach Tim Borries said.
Richmond-Burton 44, Wauconda 28: At Marian Central, the Bulldogs lost their tournament finale.
Diana Enriquez had 6 points, 5 steals and 4 rebounds for Wauconda (2-2, 1-2 tournament).
