Schools offer tours for kindergartners

Students have just wrapped up the 2010-2011 school year and are no doubt already enjoying their time off.

But for some youngsters — and their parents — the summer may bring some angst as they prepare for kindergarten in the fall.

To help little ones transition to the school day, Huntley Area District 158 is hosting a series of building tours for incoming kindergartners at the district's three elementary schools.

Tours will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 23, and Thursday, Aug. 4, at Chesak, Leggee and Mackeben elementary schools. If you have questions about the tours, please contact the school your child will be attending in the fall.

Help for veterans: McHenry County veterans and their families who are struggling with financial issues may find solutions during a free presentation at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at a recently opened drop in center, 5330 W. Elm St., McHenry.

The panel presentation will include information on debt management programs, mortgage-foreclosure prevention counseling, and pre-filing and pre-discharge bankruptcy services.

The information will be provided by Consumer Credit Counseling Services of McHenry and Lake Counties, a not-for-profit organization that works closely with veterans and their families in financial trouble.

The free presentation is offered through a federal grant awarded to Lake and McHenry counties to improve the way services are provided to veterans. The grant stipulates that veterans and their families must guide the development of services.

The drop-in center welcomes families and veterans from any conflict and branch of military service. In addition to monthly informational meetings, the drop-in center provides peer-to-peer mentoring and professional counseling. and also connects veterans with those who have shared similar experiences.
