Mundelein’s Parola closes in on coaching milestone
Mundelein baseball coach Todd Parola moved a little closer to a milestone victory Tuesday.
Parola notched the 399th win of his career, as the Mustangs remained undefeated with a 9-1 win over visiting Lake Forest.
Mundelein improved to 12-0 and 3-0 in the North Suburban Lake Division.
Luis Carrasco was 3-for-4 for the Mustangs, while Ben Mahar (5-0) went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 and allowing only 3 hits. Bill McMahon delivered a big 2-run single, and Nik Gastfield added a double for Mundelein.
Parola seeks win No. 400 today at Lake Forest.
Stevenson 5, Zion-Benton 0: Isaac Greenspon pitched a complete-game 2-hitter, striking out nine and walking five in the North Suburban Lake game.
Greenspon improved to 3-0.
Jack Karras led Stevenson (7-2, 3-0) offensively by going 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Jacob Sholl was 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI, and Barry Saks tripled for the visiting Patriots.
Vernon Hills 3, Lakes 1: The host Cougars used small ball to jump on the board early in the North Suburban Prairie contest.
In the first inning, M.J. Crowley singled and moved to third on Chris Marras’ single. Brian Palmer then executed a squeeze bunt to plate the runner the game’s first run.
In the second inning, Eric Lang led off with a single and sped to third on an infield error. Tyler Coppney supplied the bunt this time to give the Cougars all they would need.
Lakes (5-7) scored its loan run in the fourth. Kyle Noon singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and was driven in by Paul Kukulka. A.J. Metzger followed with a one out double, but winning pitcher Tyler Feece ended the threat with a strikeout and groundout.
The Eagles threatened again in the fifth, as they loaded the bases thanks to two walks and a double by Nick Traska.
But Feece got another big strikeout. Ryan Lane entered in relief and got a double-play lineout.
Vernon Hills (11-2, 2-1) picked up an insurance run in fifth. Chris Argianas reached on a walk, Crowley moved him to second on a bunt, and Marras knocked in the run with a single.
Lane retired six of the seven hitters that he faced.
Kukulka suffered the loss, despite allowing only 1 earned run in 6 innings.
Prairie Ridge 5, Grayslake North 1: Carl Russell and Brandon Fern (double) each had 2 hits for the Knights in the Fox Valley Conference game.
Adam Gomski allowed 5 runs (2 earned) in 4 innings for Grayslake North (3-8, 2-3) and suffered the loss.
Carmel 5, Grayslake Central 3: Brian Brennan homered, Mike Serio tripled and homered, and the Corsairs scored twice in the top of the fifth to erase a 3-2 deficit and win the nonconference contest.
Carmel (3-4) also got 2 hits apiece from Tim Hendricks and John Salvi. Adam Warkenthen picked up the win.
Grayslake Central (6-4) got doubles from Austin Miller and Nick Hosford.
Antioch 12, Round Lake 5: Joe Gregory homered and singled, and Adam Warner doubled and singled for the Sequoits in the North Suburban Prairie game.
Paul DeJong had a single and 2 RBI for Antioch (7-2, 2-1). Bob Pranke improved to 3-0, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) in 6 innings with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Round Lake (1-5, 0-3) was led offensively by Anthony Gutierrez, who went 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Antonio Carranza singled, scored and knocked in a run.
