For U-46 board: Kerber, Bidelman, Percy

Daily Herald Editorial Board

Why, when U-46 school board veterans Ken Kaczynski and Karen Carney have had enough, do incumbents Amy Kerber and Maria Bidelman want to run again? After massive budget cuts and laying off 400 teachers and now dealing with a federal desegregation lawsuit? Because they are committed to making U-46 a better school system.

Kerber, who has three kids in U-46 schools has been a feisty advocate for kids. Bidelman, a social worker in another district, advocates for kids from a different perspective.

All six candidates running for this board have promise and a great deal of passion. And all are from Elgin, so geography is a wash. But the two incumbents should be retained.

Gary Percy, who has been very involved since 2004 in U-46 committees, ran for a board seat two years ago and lost. This time he deserves our endorsement and a seat. Also running are Mary Van Slyck, Traci O’Neal Ellis and Jennifer Shroder.
