W. Chicago school student council hosts candidate forum

On the evening of Tuesday, March 22, the five candidates running for three seats on the West Chicago Elementary School District 33 Board of Education fielded questions from an audience comprised of teachers, students and community members.

The candidate forum was hosted by the West Chicago Middle School student council.

The members of the student council, led by teachers Matt Wood and Tom Boyk, spent three weeks preparing for the forum. At their weekly meetings the students learned about the responsibilities and duties of a Board of Education member, the format of a candidate forum, and prepared questions to ask the candidates.

According to Mr. Boyk, it was a wonderful way for the students to “see the democratic process first-hand”.

The most surprising aspect for the teacher advisors was the enthusiasm of the students. Two students asked spontaneous questions the night of the forum, and another student stated that she would like to be a member of the Board of Education in the future.

For more information on the candidates please go to the D33 website at www.wego33.org and see links to candidate profiles.

Election Day is Tuesday, April 5.
