Stevenson works OT to edge Deerfield
Stevenson’s boys basketball team needed overtime Tuesday morning to get a victory.
Playing their second game in the 33rd annual Wheeling Wildcat Hardwood Classic, the Patriots outlasted Deerfield 41-40.
Mike Fleming led Stevenson (4-7, 1-1) with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. He also had 3 assists and 4 rebounds.
Brian Carlson added 8 points and Johnny Ricchio grabbed 7 rebounds for the Patriots, who overcame a 27-21 halftime deficit. They outscored the Warriors 5-2 in the third quarter and 9-6 in the fourth to send the game to OT tied 35-35.
Richwoods 53, Lake Zurich 39: At Pekin, playing their second game of the day, the Bears fell behind 12-7 after one quarter, trailed 22-17 at halftime and then got outscored 13-4 in the third.
Mirko Grcic had 18 points to lead Lake Zurich (3-9, 1-2), while Mike Boyd added 11, sinking three 3-pointers.
“We really did not come out well out of the gate and consequently dug ourselves a hole,” Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said. “We played with more intensity in the fourth quarter, creating a lot of turnovers and attacking on the offensive end, trimming a 14-point lead down to five. Give Richwoods credit, though. They were able to answer our run and we just ran out of time and energy trying to come back. I am proud of how hard we battled and didn’t give up to get back in the game.”
Lake Zurich 39, Freeport 27: At Pekin, Mirko Grcic had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Bears in their first game of the day.
Mike Boyd and Drake Orser each scored 9 points for Lake Zurich, which opened up a 14-5 lead after one quarter.
“We did a good job of establishing the our posts guys early and got some timely shooting from (Colin) Rathe (5 points) and Boyd to get out to the early lead,” Bears coach Billy Pitcher said. “We took care of the ball down the stretch and made our free throws. I was proud of how our guys closed out the game.”
