Fremd, Barrington, Wheeling still alive

Fremd’s girls water polo team is one victory away from joining the state’s Elite Eight for a fifth straight year.

The Vikings (26-5) got 5 goals from Lauren Zambelli and 4 from Sam Matuszewski in a 15-5 victory over Conant in Schaumburg sectional semifinal play Friday.

Sam del Prado (2 goals), Breanna Anderson, Emily McCarthy and Taylor Spoonholtz also scored for the Vikings, and Julie Conrath stopped 15 shots.

Conant (21-10) got a pair of goals from Kristi Burke, and Jessica Davis turned away 13 shots.

Second-seeded Barrington (24-6) delivered a 12-7 victory over Schaumburg in the later semifinal at Schaumburg.

Kate Luedtke had 5 goals and Lisa Danhauer came up with 5 for the Fillies. Kristy Bessler had 4 for the Saxons (13-16).

Fremd and Barrington meet at 2:15 p.m. today to decide which team advances to the Elite Eight.

Palatine sectional

Second-seeded Wheeling joined the state’s Sweet Sixteen by handling No. 3 Mundelein 9-4 in the last game of the day at Palatine.

Leah Malsom had 5 goals and Shannon Richards 2 as the Mid-Suburban East champs jumped out to a 6-1 lead by the half and then protected their lead.

Wheeling (20-8) will meet top seed Stevenson, a 13-6 winner against Buffalo Grove in the earlier semifinal, in today’s 2:15 p.m. championship game.

Cami Haas led the Patriots (24-8) with 6 goals and Erin McCook had 5.

Buffalo Grove (19-12) got a pair of goals from Sara Fasching and Julie Pater.
