BG, Wheeling move on at Palatine
Buffalo Grove’s girls water polo team isn’t exiting the postseason quietly.
With 4 goals from senior Sara Fasching and 2 from Bridget White, the No. 5 seed Bison upset No. 4 Libertyville 10-8 in overtime in Palatine sectional play Thursday.
Callie Fasching made 15 saves for BG (19-11), which meets top seed Stevenson in Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal.
The Patriots (23-8) advanced with a 14-9 victory over No. 8 seed Palatine, which got 7 goals from Nicole Theis and 2 from Rachel Chumbook.
Wheeling 18, Vernon Hills 7: The Mid-Suburban East champs rolled into the sectional semifinals behind 5 goals from Therese Godlewski, and 4 apiece from Heather Murphy and Leah Malsom.
Keara Myatt made 7 saves for the Wildcats (19-8), who face Mundeein in Friday’s 8:15 p.m. semifinal. The third-seeded Mustangs (16-14) handled No. 6 Lake Forest 12-3.
Schaumburg sectional
Fremd 20, Hoffman Estates 4: Lauren Zambelli led the way for No. 1 seed Fremd with 5 goals, Sam Matuszewski had 3 and the Vikings got 2 apiece from Amy McEllen, Breanna Anderson and Emily McCarthy.
Fremd (25-5) will meet Conant (21-9) in Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal.
Conant 6, Hersey 5: Jessica Southern produced 5 goals and Jessica Davis made 25 saves as the No. 4 seed Cougars survived a fourth-quarter surge from No. 5 Hersey. Karolina Szymaszek had 2 goals for the Huskies (13-17).
Barrington 12, St. Viator 5: Barrington (23-6) will face Schaumburg (13-15) in Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal.
Schaumburg vs. Elk Grove: The third-seeded Saxons won 8-4 to eliminate the sixth-seeded Grenadiers (8-22).
Glenbrook South sectional
Evanston 6, Prospect 5: Senior Jessica Cavaiani scored 4 goals, but it was enough as sixth-seede Evanston ended the season for the Knights (11-9). The Wildkits meet top seed New Trier in Friday’s semifinals.
