Junior Jacob Trumpis pitched a complete-game 4-hitter, earning his first win of the season, as Grant’s baseball team defeated host Johnsburg 8-1 in a nonconference game Saturday.
Fellow juniors Brent Spohr and Jake Ring paced the offense for Grant (3-2), which won its second in a row. Spohr went 4-for-4 with his seventh double of the season, was hit by a pitch and drove in 3 runs. Ring was 2-for-2 with a double, 3 walks, 2 RBI and his eighth and ninth stolen bases of the season.
Grant sophomore Tino Torres was 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Trumpis struck out four.
Burlington Central 5, Grayslake Central 3: Riley Jenson was in command most of the game in leading the host Rockets past the Rams.
Jenson fanned 9 with no walks.
“Their guy was tough from the first pitch,” Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. “We really did not have an answer for him. He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes and located well.”
The hosts scored 4 runs off Rams starter Mark Ash in the second inning. Ash (2-2) struck out four. Mike Wiggins tossed 4 shutout innings for the Rams, who saw their record drop to 4-3.
“Mike kept us in the game until we could muster some offense,” Whalen said. “I’m very proud of him.”
Kristian Meehan had a 3-RBI double for Grayslake Central in the seventh. Ryan Hamrick added a pair of singles for the Rams.
Lake Zurich 6, Prospect 5: The Bears rallied for a solo run in the bottom of the seventh to cap a come-from-behind win.
James DeGeorge (double), Collin Roto (double) and Joey Pizzaloto all had late RBI for Lake Zurich (7-2), which trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third. The Bears scored one run in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Jake Guilianelli pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Tanner Kiser to earn the win. Dom Demicco was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Lake Zurich.
