Lakes muscles out win over Grant
The Lakes and Grant girls basketball teams faced off in a physical and close contest Tuesday night.
Lakes prevailed 51-47.
"This is the type of game that we have every time we play Grant a close, tough physical contest where every loose ball there will be four players scrambling to get to (the ball)," Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. "We are fortunate to get away with the win and we will take it."
Grant held the largest lead, up five with 5 minutes to go in the game. Amanda Smith came up with a big play to get Lakes back in the game, hitting Terese McMahon open under the basket. McMahon led Lakes in scoring with 23 points.
Smith had 7 points.
"Too often Amanda is not looking to score enough, but she can handle the ball and distribute it better than any guards that we have seen," Schneider said.
The game was tied at 47-47 when Ashlee Cunningham, who finished with 14 points, made 1 of 2 free throws to give Lakes a 1-point lead with 1:45 to go in the game. Smith then found McMahon open under the basket with 30 seconds to go. Smith gave the Eagles the winning cushion with 2 seconds to go at the line.
Grant was led by Morgan Jahnke with 15 points and Sadie Contereras with 7 points.
"Grant plays hard," Schneidere said. "They have had our number the last couple of years. It is good to see that we are developing the poise to finish the game."
