Prairie Ridge denies Jacobs' Mitz his 200th win
Refrigerate the cake. Put the celebratory balloons on hold.
Jacobs coach Bill Mitz's 200th career win will have to wait at least one more week.
Prairie Ridge proved too much for the Golden Eagles. Outscoring Jacobs 27-0 in the first half, the Wolves cruised to a 33-6 win in Fox Valley Conference crossover action at PR Athletic Stadium in Crystal Lake Friday night. PR remains perfect at 3-0 while Jacobs drops to 2-1.
"They really pitched the ball well on the option tonight," said Mitz. "The first two games they didn't pitch it much and we didn't defend parts of the option very well. They are a very good football team. We played a better second half and that is something to build on."
With quarterback Stephen Covalt making the perfect reads, the Wolves' offense amassed 270 yards rushing and scored 4 times during the first 24 minutes. Covalt, who scored on a 74 yard run, also tossed a 9-yard touchdown to Mick Tomberlin. The Wolves also got a 39-yard TD run from Joe Campbell and a 1-yard TD plunge from Connor Greenwald. Greenwald also scored on a 12-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
For the game, PR ran for 335 yards on 43 carries. Covalt ran 14 times for 124 yards and a score while Greenwald also cleared the 100-yard barrier with 101 yards on 16 carries with 2 scores.
Covalt was an efficient 5-of-7 passing for 45 yards and a score.
The PR defense held Jacobs to 150 yards rushing and 112 yards passing for 262 yards of total offense. The Wolves' defense picked off Jason Judson twice, one from Ryan Melbourn and one by John Borst.
"It has been the same pattern the first three weeks," said Prairie Ridge coach Chris Schremp. "We start fast offensively and score a lot of points in the first half and then sputter a little in the second half. Stephen (Covalt) did a great job of reading Jacobs' defense in the first half and we got some big plays. Thank goodness our defense has played well for four quarters in all of our first the games. They are very athletic and came up with some big plays.
The Golden Eagles' only score came on a 7-yard TD pass from Judson to Caz Zyks with 8:20 left in the game.
Judson completed 10-of-24 passes for 112 yards with 2 interceptions and a TD. Tight end Adam Bogdan caught 3 passes for 41 yards for the Eagles.
